Anne Dudley Bradstreet

(1612-1672)

Biography

Married at sixteen to Simon Bradstreet, Anne and her family came from England with John Winthrop aboard the Arbella in 1630.  In addition to establishing a home in the “New World” and giving birth to eight children, Bradstreet honed her artistic skills.  Although her brother-in-law published her volume of poetry The Tenth Muse without her permission (and thus without allowing her to make what she felt were necessary revisions), she has the honor of being the first North American to publish a volume of poetry.
