Judith Cocks

(fl. 1795)

Biography

Judith Cocks's early life is unknown to us.  But in 1795 she wrote a letter to her master, James Hillhouse, a United States Representative (1796-96) and later a Senator (1796-1810) from Connecticut.  This document is one of the very few extant letters written by a slave woman before 1800.  The letter refers to her indenture to a Georgia slaveowner.
